Small Wonders: Halloween Party

We had our Halloween party last weekend and it was a big success. Even though watching shows and cooking dinner with my boyfriend or having a few people over to play a game is one of my favorite ways to spend a night, it was a nice change of pace to get out socially and meet new people. The night was a blast – and decorating for the party may have been even more fun (the clean up, not so much).

A fountain skull that lights up acted as the centerpiece on our coffee table in the living room.

I forgot how cool dry ice can be. We had dry ice flowing throughout the apartment and special lighting including red lights in the kitchen an black lights in the living room.

Guests could change the color of their cup thanks to tiny lights inside of them. The glasses looked great around the apartment which was dimly lit.

This creepy guy was hidden amidst our cobweb-covered walls.

Effie Trinket Costume

I decided on my costume just a few days before our big Halloween bash this past weekend. I went through several other costume ideas and even began making one, but wasn’t particularly excited about it. Since the holiday is one of my favorites and I enjoy dressing up and putting together a costume, I decided not to settle. I started thinking about some of the good films over the past year and remembered one of my favorite characters and costumes of the year – Effie Trinket of The Hunger Games.

After studying some of the movie screen shots and photo shoots with Elizabeth Banks, I realized I already had the basic clothing staples for the look (a brightly colored peplum dress, ribbon and cage-style heels). I ordered a few accessories from Amazon (this wig, the bolero and oversized flowers) and made sure to go over the top with the makeup. These eyelashes were so much fun to wear. I’m tempted to wear the outfit again tomorrow night, but I think I had enough fun this weekend.

Hope you all have a happy Halloween!

Halloween

I cannot be more excited about our yearly Halloween party happening tomorrow. Halloween is easily one of my favorite holidays. I love it all – creating a costume, dressing up, making and eating sweets (unfortunately) and hosting a party. We have already decorated our entire apartment, created a spooky soundtrack and made some yummy treats like eyeball red velvet cupcakes and a blood punch with vodka-soaked gummy worms.

I had a hard time deciding on this year’s costume, but I finally decided on Effie Trinket, a creepy, yet endearing character from Hunger Games (Elizabeth Banks if you’ve seen the movie). Her makeup and wardrobe (mostly McQueen) were amazing, quirky and fun and I am enjoying recreating the look. I adored my costume last year and hope I’ll feel the same about this one. Here are a few snapshots from last year’s:

On another note, I realized that one of my first posts on The Autumn Issue was about Halloween. I can’t believe it has already been a year of blogging. Thank you to all who have read and supported the site! I truly appreciate it. xx
